Retrospect (Black and White) by Keith Haring is a silkscreen print from 1989. The work contains 24 different images in a 6×4 grid, many of which correspond to images included in his Pop Shop series. Haring created six different Pop Shop suites, each having four unique prints. He also created a Pop Shop Quad series, which was composed of 6 different published prints which each displayed one of the full Pop Shop suites.

Retrospect (Black and White) can also be viewed as a retrospective of Haring’s oeuvre in general. The piece contains all of his most famous symbols and scenes: radiant babies, dolphins, flying angels, barking dogs, and other classic Haring motifs, like conjoined figures or people dancing.

At this time, in 1989, Haring was committed to creating as much art as he possible could. Having received his AIDS diagnosis the year prior, Haring became determined to raise awareness through his artwork and contribute to the causes he held dear to him. He established the Keith Haring Foundation in 1989, for the purpose of providing funding and artistic assets to AIDS organizations and children’s programs. The Foundation also allowed for the licensing of his images, so that he could proliferate his artwork more effectively around the globe, promoting his values of peace, safety, and kindness.

Keith Haring also created a Retrospect (Colors) silkscreen print.
